Kota sits on the east bank of the Chambal in south-east Rajasthan, at the centre of the Hadoti region. This directory lists every place we cover in the city and across Hadoti, from the Garh Palace and Kishore Sagar in the old city to the stepwells of Bundi, the water fort of Gagron and the ancient temples of Baran. Each guide has the history, what to see, practical details and nearby places to combine.

If you only have a day or two, start with the top tourist places in Kota or follow a ready-made itinerary. For a quick orientation: the heritage core (Garh Palace, Kishore Sagar, Jagmandir, the old city gates and the riverfront) is compact and easy to cover by auto-rickshaw, while the gorges, wildlife reserves and the towns of Bundi, Jhalawar and Baran need a car and a full day each.

Distances in the guides are approximate road distances from central Kota, and timings and entry charges change from season to season, so confirm them locally before you set out.

How to get around

Within Kota, auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover the heritage core, the lake and the riverfront easily. For the Chambal gorge viewpoints, Mukundara Hills and day trips to Bundi, Jhalawar, Baran, Baroli and Menal, hire a car with a driver for the day; public buses run to the towns but not to most of the sights outside them. Our guide to how to reach Kota covers trains, roads and the nearest airports, and the best time to visit Kota explains the seasons.
