Sukh Mahal, Bundi: Kipling's Lakeside Palace and Museum

Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated

Set on the tranquil banks of Jait Sagar Lake just outside Bundi town, Sukh Mahal is a modest but utterly charming summer palace built as a royal retreat from the heat. A small white-and-ochre pavilion with a marble umbrella-topped chhatri projecting over the water, it is the sort of place designed purely for cool breezes and quiet afternoons.

The palace’s greatest fame comes from its literary connection: Rudyard Kipling spent a night here during his Rajputana tour of 1887-88, and it is often linked, by tradition, with his novel Kim. A small museum now occupies part of the building. The gardens and the reflective lake beyond make it a peaceful counterpoint to the busier sights in town.

History of Sukh Mahal

Sukh Mahal, the “palace of pleasure”, was built in 1776, during the reign of the Bundi ruler Rao Raja Vishnu (Bishan) Singh, as a summer retreat beside Jait Sagar Lake. Its lakeside setting and open pavilions were designed to catch cooling breezes during the fierce Rajasthan summer. Some sources describe it as early or mid-18th century; 1776 is the date given for its construction under the ruler’s diwan, Sukhram. Bishan Singh is the same ruler who signed Bundi’s 1818 treaty with the British, as told in our history of Bundi.

Kipling at Sukh Mahal

The best description of the palace in the 19th century comes from Rudyard Kipling himself. Arriving at Bundi’s gate in 1887-88, he asked where he could sleep and was sent to “the Sukh Mahal, which is beyond the city”, which he described as a pavilion on a lake: two turrets joined by an open colonnade. The caretaker was old, the pigeons had taken over, and servants spent the evening wrapping canvas round some pillars to make him a room. He fell asleep to the sound of water escaping over the overflow and birds on the lake, and in the morning admired the black rock and grey chhatri above the bund and the garden below it.

Rajasthan Tourism repeats the popular belief that Kipling wrote part of Kim here. Kim was published in 1901 and his own Bundi letters do not mention it, so treat that as tradition. Our Kipling in Bundi guide follows his whole visit, from the road to the palace.

Tips for your visit

  • Go early or late. The light on Jait Sagar is softest after sunrise and before sunset, and the pavilion is cooler.
  • Walk to Kshar Bagh. The royal cenotaphs of Bundi stand nearby; see Bundi’s cenotaphs.
  • Read Kipling first. His Bundi letters are free on Project Gutenberg and take under an hour to read.
  • Add the stepwells. Combine the lake with the stepwells of Bundi in the old town for a full morning.

Combine Sukh Mahal with nearby places

  • Jait Sagar Lake: A picturesque artificial lake north of Bundi, framed by low hills and covered in seasonal lotus blooms.
  • Bundi Palace: A dramatic hillside palace celebrated for the Chitrashala, whose walls are covered in some of Rajasthan’s finest miniature murals.
  • Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri: A striking two-storey royal cenotaph supported by 84 carved pillars, set in a garden on the edge of Bundi.
