Jait Sagar Lake, Bundi: Lotus Lake, Sukh Mahal and Walks

Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated

Jait Sagar is a long, peaceful lake stretched along the foot of the hills just north of Bundi. In the cooler months its surface is carpeted with lotus and water lilies, and the surrounding ridges are dotted with old pavilions, gardens and the summer palace of Sukh Mahal on its bank.

The lakeside is a favourite spot for gentle walks, birdwatching and quiet picnics, with migratory birds arriving in winter to add to the tranquil scene. The Kshar Bagh royal gardens and rows of old cenotaphs nearby make the whole area a rewarding place to wander.

It pairs naturally with Sukh Mahal on a relaxed day trip from Kota through the Hadoti region.

History of Jait Sagar Lake

Jait Sagar was created as one of Bundi’s principal water reservoirs, held back by an embankment (bund) across the valley north of the town. The Bundi rulers landscaped its shores with gardens and pleasure pavilions, turning a functional reservoir into a scenic royal retreat; the best known is Sukh Mahal, built in 1776.

The lake remained central to Bundi’s water supply and to the leisure life of its court, and the surrounding cenotaphs and gardens grew up around it over generations. Rajasthan Tourism describes Jait Sagar as a pictorial lake close to Taragarh Fort, surrounded by hills and covered with lotus flowers in winter and the monsoon.

Jait Sagar in Kipling’s words

When Rudyard Kipling stayed at Sukh Mahal in 1887-88, he spent an hour exploring the lake while waiting for a room to be made ready. He described water winding in and out among the hills, a hill of black rock on the bund side crowned with a grey stone chhatri, a garden below the bund “as fair as eye could wish”, and little temples dotted along the shore. At night he heard water birds on the lake and was told that tigers sometimes wandered the hills above. The tigers are long gone, but the shape of the scene is the same. Read the full story in Kipling in Bundi.

Kshar Bagh and the royal cenotaphs

Near the lake, on the Shikar Burj-Jait Sagar road, Kshar Bagh (also called Saar Bagh) holds the memorial cenotaphs of Bundi’s royal family, according to Rajasthan Tourism. It is a quiet, atmospheric place with finely carved chhatris; our page on Bundi’s cenotaphs has more.
