Shergarh Fort, Baran: History, Sanctuary and Visitor Guide
Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated
Perched above the Parvan river in Baran district, Shergarh Fort is one of the oldest fortified sites in the Hadoti region. Rajasthan Tourism describes it as one of Baran’s most popular attractions, a monument of strategic importance ruled by different dynasties over the years. Its original name was Koshavardhan, and an inscription of 790 CE reflects its early history. Around it lies the forested Shergarh sanctuary, which makes the trip as much about landscape as about history.
It is rarely crowded, and the riverside setting is quietly beautiful. For travellers willing to go off the main routes from Kota, it is a rewarding half-day.
History of Shergarh Fort
The site’s history begins long before the fort’s present name. Rajasthan Tourism records that Shergarh was originally called Koshavardhan and that an inscription dated 790 CE attests its antiquity. That places it in the same early medieval world as the temples of Kakoni, further along the Parvan, and Baroli on the Chambal.
The name Shergarh, “Sher’s fort”, is linked by Rajasthan Tourism to its capture by Sher Shah of the Sur dynasty, the Afghan ruler who briefly displaced the Mughals in the 1540s. Its position on the river made it valuable to successive powers. Before independence, most of present-day Baran district formed part of the princely state of Kota (see the history of Kota).
We have not found a reliable published account of the individual buildings inside the fort, so this page does not list them. Expect ruined walls, gateways and the remains of structures from different periods, and allow time to explore.
Shergarh sanctuary
Rajasthan Tourism describes the Shergarh sanctuary, around Shergarh village, as a destination for nature lovers, rich in flora and fauna, with several endangered plant species and animals including sloth bears, leopards and wild boar (its list also includes tigers; if seeing a tiger is your aim, a designated reserve such as the Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve is the place to try). Wildlife sightings are a matter of luck; the forest and river views are the reliable reward.
