Kishore Sagar Lake Kota: History, Jagmandir and Lake Walk
Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated

Kishore Sagar is Kota’s beloved city lake, an artificial reservoir dug centuries ago that still shapes the character of the old town. Its calm expanse of water sets off the tiny Jagmandir Palace at its centre, and the promenade that rings the lake fills up every evening with families, walkers and street-food carts.
Boating on the lake is the classic thing to do, gliding out toward the island palace as the sun drops.
Because it sits so centrally, Kishore Sagar makes a natural base for a half-day in the old city, pairing easily with the government museum and the Garh Palace.
History of Kishore Sagar Lake
The lake is usually dated to 1346, when it was built by Prince Dhir Deh of Bundi, nearly three centuries before Kota became a separate state.
That makes it one of the oldest surviving water bodies in Kota, and a reminder that the area was part of the Hada lands of Bundi long before Kota became a separate state in the 17th century (see history of Kota). In a dry region, tanks like this were both reservoirs for the town and settings for royal leisure.
Its importance grew when the Jagmandir pavilion was built on an island in the middle of the lake. Rajasthan Tourism says it was built by one of the queens of Kota between 1743 and 1745, in red sandstone; see our Jagmandir Palace page. Nearby, on the bank, the royal cenotaphs of Kshar Bagh (Keshar Bagh) commemorate members of the ruling family; see Kesar Bagh cenotaphs.
Restoration and beautification drives in recent years have revived its banks with lighting, walkways and gardens, keeping it a living public space rather than a mere relic.
A walk around the lake
A slow circuit of Kishore Sagar is one of the easiest ways into old Kota. A good order is:
- Start at the Government Museum in the Brijvilas palace by the lake, which displays sculpture from Kakoni and other old sites of Hadoti.
- Walk along the bank to the viewpoints facing Jagmandir, and take a boat out if boats are running.
- Visit the Kshar Bagh cenotaphs, with their carved stone canopies.
- End at the Seven Wonders Park on the lakeside, best around sunset when the lights come on.
Our Kota heritage walk extends this into the walled city and the Garh Palace, and the 1 day in Kota plan shows how to fit it into a short visit.
