Rangbari Talab Kota: A Quiet Tank for Walks and Birds

Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated

Rangbari Talab is one of Kota’s quieter water bodies, a tank in the Rangbari area in the south of the city. It is not a headline sight, and we would not suggest crossing the city just for it. But if you are visiting the temples of this part of Kota, or you simply want an early-morning walk away from traffic, its still water, trees and open edges make a pleasant pause, and in winter it can be a good spot for casual birdwatching.

History of Rangbari Talab

There is no published history of this particular tank, and we have not found a reliable date for its construction. What can be said is that tanks (talab) like Rangbari were a standard part of the landscape of Rajasthani towns and villages, dug or dammed to hold monsoon rain for drinking, washing, cattle and irrigation through the dry months. Kota’s rulers built larger lakes such as Kishore Sagar, but smaller neighbourhood tanks served settlements on the edge of the city.

Rangbari itself is now part of the expanding south of Kota. Rajasthan Tourism mentions the Rangbadi Balaji temple as a stop on the way to the Khade Ganesh Ji temple, which it describes as unusual for its standing image of Ganesha. The tank, the Balaji temple and Khade Ganesh Ji together make a small, easy outing in this part of the city.

What to see at Rangbari Talab

  • A calm neighbourhood tank on the southern side of Kota
  • Trees and open banks for a short walk
  • Resident waterbirds year-round and, in winter, migrants
  • Soft light at dawn and dusk
  • Rangbadi Balaji temple nearby

Birdwatching tips

Urban tanks around Kota can be surprisingly productive. Without a published bird list for Rangbari, we will not promise particular species, but common birds of water bodies in this part of Rajasthan include egrets, herons, cormorants, kingfishers and, in winter, ducks.

  1. Go at first light, when birds are active and the area is quiet.
  2. Bring binoculars and scan the edges and any vegetation in the water.
  3. Move slowly and stay on the path; do not disturb nesting or roosting birds.
  4. Combine with the Chambal. For a serious birding morning, the boat trips from the forest jetty near Chambal Garden offer far more; see our Chambal river safari guide.
