Jhalawar Garh Palace: Fort, Museum and Natyashala Guide
Written by Kota Rajasthan Editorial Team · Updated

The Garh Palace, or Jhalawar Fort, stands squarely in the centre of Jhalawar town, a substantial 19th-century royal residence built by the Jhala rulers. Behind its walls lie painted rooms, mirror-work chambers and courtyards that reflect the tastes of a relatively young princely state that took pride in art and culture.
Part of the complex now houses a government museum with an excellent collection of ancient sculptures, inscriptions, coins, manuscripts and miniature paintings drawn from across the Hadoti region, making it one of the best places to understand the area’s deep history. The adjoining Bhawani Natyashala theatre adds to the appeal.
History of Jhalawar Fort
Jhalawar was carved out of Kota as a separate princely state in 1838 for Madan Singh, grandson of Kota’s regent Zalim Singh Jhala, who took the title Maharaj Rana. Rajasthan Tourism says the Garh Palace was built by Madan Singh and his successors between 1838 and 1854, and that the paintings in its rooms were added later. As a comparatively new state, Jhalawar invested heavily in culture, art and public works. Our history of Jhalawar explains how the state was created, broken up in 1897 and re-formed in 1899.
The palace’s rooms display fine frescoes on walls and mirrors, which Rajasthan Tourism calls prime examples of the art, and its transformation to include a museum has preserved a rich store of the region’s antiquities for visitors and scholars alike.
The Government Museum and the theatre
The Government Museum, part of the Garh complex, was established in 1915 and is one of the oldest museums in Rajasthan. Rajasthan Tourism mentions rare paintings, manuscripts and idols, and inscriptions dating back to the 5th and 7th centuries; many sculptures come from temple sites around Jhalawar such as Jhalrapatan and Kakoni. Next to it stands the Bhawani Natyashala, the theatre built in 1921 by Maharaj Rana Bhawani Singh, the same ruler who founded the museum. For collections nearer Kota, see our museums in Kota guide.
