Menal, on the border of the Bhilwara and Chittorgarh districts along the Kota-Chittorgarh road, is a wonderful combination of nature and heritage. In the monsoon, the Menal stream plunges over a cliff into a deep, forested gorge, creating a powerful waterfall that thunders through the ravine and draws visitors from across the region.

Beside the falls stands an ancient complex of Shiva temples, sometimes attributed to the Chauhan and Gurjara-Pratihara periods, with finely carved shikharas and sculpture. The pairing of roaring water and time-worn stone makes Menal an especially atmospheric and photogenic destination.

Though a longer excursion, Menal is one of the most spectacular monsoon day trips from Kota and a memorable stop for those combining Hadoti tourism with the road toward Chittorgarh.

History of Menal Waterfall & Temples

The temples at Menal date from around the 11th-12th centuries and are associated with the Chauhan rulers and earlier medieval dynasties, built in the elaborate north Indian temple style. The site was an important Shaivite centre and is linked in tradition to royal patronage.

The combination of the sacred temples and the natural waterfall has made Menal a place of both pilgrimage and pleasure for many centuries.

Story & Legend

It is said that the sage-king who ruled here so loved the roar of the falls that he built his temples beside them, believing the endless voice of the water to be the sound of Shiva's own meditation echoing through the gorge.
