In just a few years, Kota went from an industrial and education city to one of Rajasthan's most talked-about urban makeovers. A concentrated push of public infrastructure — driven by the state government's Urban Development & Housing programme during 2018–2023 — gave the city a spectacular riverfront, a huge new park, and a road network designed to run without a single traffic signal.
A signal-free city
The boldest idea was to make Kota a traffic signal-free city. Instead of red lights, the city's busiest junctions were rebuilt with flyovers, elevated roads and underpasses so that traffic could flow continuously. For commuters this meant dramatically shorter travel times; for the city it meant a modern, big-city feel. Kota is frequently cited as one of the first cities in India to pursue a fully signal-free road system on this scale.
Oxygen City Park — a green lung
The Oxygen City Park (Kota City Park) was created as one of the largest urban parks in the region, complete with lakes, jogging and cycling tracks, a dense "oxygen zone" of plantation, musical fountains, food courts and family attractions. It gave residents a vast new space to breathe, walk and unwind.
Aerodrome Circle & city beautification
The iconic Aerodrome Circle was transformed into a grand gateway junction, and across the city, roads, dividers, circles and public spaces were landscaped and lit. Together with the Seven Wonders Park, these projects turned everyday streetscapes into attractions.
The Chambal Riverfront

Signal-Free City initiative launched
A city-wide plan to eliminate traffic signals through a network of flyovers, elevated roads and underpasses was set in motion, aiming to make Kota one of India's first fully signal-free cities.
Multiple flyovers & elevated roads
Work advanced on major flyovers and elevated corridors at the city's busiest junctions to keep traffic moving without stops.
Underpasses at key circles
A series of underpasses was built at major intersections, allowing vehicles to cross without waiting — a cornerstone of the signal-free vision.
Oxygen City Park (Kota City Park)
A vast new green lung for the city, the Oxygen / City Park was developed with lakes, walking trails, an oxygen zone of dense plantation, food courts and family attractions.
Aerodrome Circle makeover
The landmark Aerodrome Circle was redeveloped as a grand gateway junction with landscaping, fountains and iconic lighting.
Chambal (Kota) Riverfront
The showpiece of modern Kota — the world's largest riverfront — opened in stages, with monumental ghats, gates and the record-breaking bell.
Seven Wonders & beautification
Alongside the Seven Wonders Park, extensive beautification of roads, dividers, circles and public spaces gave the whole city a facelift.
