Bijolia Temples

An ancient Shiva temple group on the Kota-Chittorgarh road

πŸ—Ί Nearby Getaway πŸ“ 100 km from Kota ⭐ Medieval Shiva temples and historic Chauhan inscriptions

Near the small town of Bijolia, along the Kota-Chittorgarh route, stands an old and revered group of temples dedicated chiefly to Shiva. Once said to number in the dozens, several fine shrines survive, their carved shikharas and sculpted panels reflecting the artistic traditions of medieval Rajasthan.

The main temples, including the Undeshwar and Mahakaleshwar shrines, sit around a sacred tank and retain a quiet, devotional atmosphere. Ancient inscriptions found at Bijolia are historically important, shedding light on the Chauhan dynasty and the region's past.

Bijolia makes an interesting heritage stop, especially when combined with the nearby Menal waterfall, and adds depth to a longer Hadoti tourism day trip from Kota toward Chittorgarh.

History of Bijolia Temples

The Bijolia temples date largely from the 11th-12th centuries and are associated with the Chauhan period, built in the north Indian temple style. Bijolia was an important centre, and its inscriptions are valuable sources for the history of the Chauhans and the region.

Though many of the original temples have been lost over the centuries, the surviving shrines and the sacred tank preserve the site's ancient sanctity and artistic legacy.

Story & Legend

Tradition holds that Bijolia once had a temple for every day of the year, and that a great king raised them in a single act of devotion; folk say that those washed away by time were carried off by the gods themselves to adorn the heavens.
