The temples of Baroli, also spelled Badoli, near Rawatbhata are among the oldest and most beautiful in all of Rajasthan. Set in a quiet grove not far from the Chambal, this compact complex of nine sandstone temples dates back over a thousand years and preserves some of the finest early medieval sculpture in the region.

The principal shrine, the Ghateshwar Mahadev temple dedicated to Shiva, is a masterpiece of delicate carving, with beautifully sculpted deities, celestial dancers and ornamental panels. The other temples, dedicated to various gods, add to a sense of stepping into a living museum of early Rajput and Pratihara art.

History of Baroli (Badoli) Temples

The Baroli temples were built roughly between the 8th and 10th centuries CE, during the Gurjara-Pratihara period, making them among the earliest temple groups in Rajasthan. They exemplify the mature north Indian style of the era, with elaborately carved shikharas, pillars and sculpture.

Sadly, some of the site's finest sculptures were stolen or damaged over the years, and a few pieces have been recovered and returned. Even so, the surviving carving, especially at the Ghateshwar Mahadev temple, confirms Baroli's place among the artistic high points of medieval Rajasthan.

Story & Legend

Devotees say the Ghateshwar Mahadev temple is so ancient and holy that the very stones remember the first prayers offered here, and that Shiva himself is pleased to dwell in a shrine carved with such devotion by the sculptors of old.
