Kishore Sagar Lake

The 14th-century heart of the city, cradling Jagmandir Palace

πŸ—Ί Kota City πŸ“ 2 km from Kota ⭐ Historic city lake with Jagmandir Palace

Kishore Sagar is Kota's beloved city lake, an artificial reservoir dug centuries ago that still shapes the character of the old town. Its calm expanse of water sets off the tiny Jagmandir Palace at its centre, and the promenade that rings the lake fills up every evening with families, walkers and street-food carts.

Boating on the lake is the classic thing to do, gliding out toward the island palace as the sun drops. The banks are dotted with gardens and viewpoints, and the whole area lights up beautifully after dark, making it one of the most relaxed Kota tourist places for an unhurried outing.

Because it sits so centrally, Kishore Sagar makes a natural base for a half-day in the old city, pairing easily with the government museum and the Garh Palace.

History of Kishore Sagar Lake

Kishore Sagar was created in the 14th century, commissioned by a prince of the region, and is one of the oldest surviving water bodies in Kota. It was built both as a reservoir and as a landscaped royal amenity.

Its importance grew after the Jagmandir Palace was raised on an island in its middle in the 18th century, tying the lake permanently to the royal family's leisure life. Over the generations it also served the practical needs of the surrounding old city.

Restoration and beautification drives in recent years have revived its banks with lighting, walkways and gardens, keeping it a living public space rather than a mere relic.

Story & Legend

Older residents recall a belief that the lake never fully empties, however dry the season, because it was blessed at its founding, a small assurance of prosperity for the city that grew around it.
