Jagmandir Palace

A honey-coloured island palace floating on Kishore Sagar

Jagmandir is the picture-postcard image of Kota, a delicate island palace of warm red-and-gold sandstone that seems to float on the blue water of Kishore Sagar. Built in the middle of the lake, it is compact rather than grand, but its proportions and reflection make it one of the most romantic tourist places in Kota.

You can admire it from the landscaped promenade around the lake or take a short boat ride out to the island when boating is running. In the evening the palace is lit up, its silhouette shimmering across the water, a favourite spot for couples, families and photographers alike.

Combine a visit with a stroll along Kishore Sagar's banks and the nearby Brijvilas Palace grounds, which today house a government museum. It is an easy, pleasant outing right in the heart of the city.

History of Jagmandir Palace

Jagmandir was built in the mid-18th century, commissioned during the reign of the Kota royal house and associated with Rani Brij Kunwar, one of the Maharani consorts of the state. The lake it sits on, Kishore Sagar, dates back further, to the 14th century.

The palace was conceived as a pleasure pavilion where the royal family could escape the heat and enjoy the water, a common feature of Rajput lake architecture. Over time it became inseparable from Kota's identity.

Though small, it survives as a fine example of the ornate sandstone craftsmanship of the Hadoti region and remains a protected heritage landmark.

Story & Legend

It is fondly said in Kota that the palace was raised by a grieving Maharani in memory of her love, and that on still evenings the lamps reflected in the lake are meant to guide that memory home.
