History of Shergarh Fort

Shergarh, historically known by the name Koshavardhan, has roots going back to at least the early medieval period, with ancient temples and sculptures indicating a long-established settlement. It was later fortified and renamed after the Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri's era of influence in the region.

Over the centuries the site absorbed successive religious and political layers, leaving a fort where Hindu shrines, Jain remains and Islamic monuments stand side by side as a record of its varied past.

Story & Legend

Local tradition holds that the fort has never truly been empty since ancient times, and that beneath its ground lie older temples still, so that every ruler who took Shergarh was really only the latest guest in a place far older than any of them.
