On the banks of the Parvan River in the Baran district lie the atmospheric ruins of Kakoni, once a flourishing temple town. Scattered across the site are the remains of numerous stone temples, along with fine sculptures, carved doorframes and fragments of shrines that hint at the grandeur the place once possessed.

Though much is broken and overgrown, the surviving carving is beautiful, and the riverside setting lends the ruins a quiet, elegiac charm. Many of the finest sculptures from Kakoni have been moved to museums, but enough remains in situ to make a visit worthwhile for lovers of ancient art.

Kakoni is a genuinely offbeat entry among Baran's tourist places, ideal for the traveller who enjoys tracking down forgotten heritage on a longer Hadoti tourism excursion from Kota.

History of Kakoni Temples

The Kakoni temples date from around the 8th to 11th centuries and were built during the flowering of medieval temple architecture in the region. The complex once contained many shrines dedicated to various deities and was an important religious centre.

Over time the town declined and its temples fell into ruin, though the quality of the remaining sculpture confirms Kakoni's former importance in the sacred landscape of Hadoti.

Story & Legend

Folk memory holds that Kakoni was once a great city of a hundred temples whose bells could be heard for miles, until a curse or a great flood brought it low, leaving only the stones by the river as a reminder of its vanished glory.
