The Kansua Temple, dedicated to Shiva as Karneshwar Mahadev, is among the most ancient and atmospheric of the temples in Kota. Set in the Kansua locality, it is a place where you feel the deep antiquity of Hadoti, worn stone, weathered carvings and a sanctum that has drawn worshippers for well over a thousand years.

Its most distinctive feature is a rare four-faced (chaturmukhi) Shiva lingam, an unusual form that makes the shrine especially venerated among devotees. Old inscriptions in and around the temple point to its great age and its importance through successive dynasties of the region.

Quieter than Kota's grander sights, Kansua rewards those interested in history and living faith. Mahashivratri here is particularly special, when the temple fills with devotees and the ancient stones ring with chanting.

History of Kansua Temple (Karneshwar Mahadev)

Kansua is regarded as one of the oldest surviving temples in the Kota region, with origins traced back well over a millennium and inscriptions that scholars date to the early medieval period.

The temple was patronised across several ruling dynasties of the Hadoti area, and its inscriptions are valued as historical records of the region's early history, predating the founding of Kota state itself in 1631.

Through centuries of change it has remained a continuously worshipped Shiva shrine, its rare four-faced lingam a focus of unbroken devotion.

Story & Legend

Local tradition links the site to the sage Karna and to the very old sacred geography of the area, and devotees believe that offering prayers at the four-faced lingam brings blessings from every direction at once.
