Geparnath (Gaipernath) Waterfall

A hidden Shiva shrine and waterfall deep in a Chambal gorge

πŸ—Ί Kota City πŸ“ 22 km from Kota ⭐ Gorge waterfall and Shiva temple

Geparnath, also spelled Gaipernath, is one of the most atmospheric natural spots near Kota, a waterfall and ancient Shiva temple hidden at the foot of a dramatic gorge above the Chambal. Reaching it means descending a long, steep flight of hundreds of steps into the ravine, and the effort is part of the pilgrimage and the adventure.

At the bottom you find the temple of Geparnath Mahadev tucked into the rock, and, especially after the monsoon, a waterfall tumbling into the gorge in a green, cool, secluded amphitheatre of cliffs. The sound of falling water and the isolation make it feel worlds away from the city.

It is a favourite of trekkers, devotees and nature seekers alike. Go with good shoes, water and a companion, and you will be rewarded with one of the most unusual and memorable of all places to visit in Kota.

History of Geparnath (Gaipernath) Waterfall

Geparnath is an old Shiva shrine, Geparnath Mahadev, set within a natural gorge that feeds toward the Chambal, and it has long been a place of pilgrimage for devotees of Shiva.

Its remote, dramatic location, at the base of a deep ravine reached by hundreds of steps, has kept it relatively unspoiled and given it an enduring aura of sanctity.

The temple's antiquity and its wild setting have made it both a spiritual destination and a draw for those seeking natural beauty near Kota.

Story & Legend

Devotees believe the gorge itself is sacred to Shiva, and that the waterfall is his perpetual abhishek, an unending offering of water to the lingam hidden below, which is why the falls are said never to run truly dry.
