Chambal Garden

Riverside greenery with a crocodile pond and gentle boat rides

πŸ—Ί Kota City πŸ“ 4 km from Kota ⭐ Riverside garden with crocodile pond and boating

Chambal Garden is a leafy, family-friendly park laid out along the banks of the Chambal River, just below the Kota Barrage. It has long been a favourite Sunday spot for Kota families, with shaded lawns, flowering beds and a pretty pond crossed by a suspension bridge.

The garden's claim to fame is its association with the Chambal's reptiles, a small pond here historically housed crocodiles and gharials, and boat rides on the river offer the chance to spot these creatures basking on the banks. It is a gentle, safe way to experience the wildness of the Chambal without venturing far from the city.

With its riverside setting and easy access, Chambal Garden ranks among the most relaxing places to visit in Kota for a slow morning or a picnic afternoon.

History of Chambal Garden

Chambal Garden was developed as a public recreation ground on the riverbank during the growth of modern Kota in the mid-20th century, taking advantage of the regulated river below the newly built barrage.

Its crocodile and gharial pond became a signature attraction, reflecting the Chambal's status as one of the last strongholds of the endangered gharial in India.

The garden has been maintained and periodically refreshed as one of the city's oldest formal green spaces along the river.

Story & Legend

Locals half-jokingly warn children never to trail their hands in the Chambal here, telling them the old crocodiles remember every visitor who has ever teased them from the boats.
