Zalim Singh Jhala

Zalim Singh Jhala was the most famous administrator in Kota's history. As Diwan (chief minister) and de facto regent, he wielded real power in the state for close to fifty years, guiding Kota through the chaotic era of Maratha raids and the rise of British power in India.

A shrewd diplomat and military organiser, he negotiated a treaty with the British in 1817 that secured Kota's protection. His influence became so entrenched that his descendants were eventually granted the separate state of Jhalawar.

Contribution to Kota

He modernised Kota's revenue and defence systems, built irrigation works and fortifications, and through careful diplomacy preserved Kota's autonomy when many states were being swallowed by war. The very creation of neighbouring Jhalawar traces back to his lineage.
